Notes |
- Margaret was the daughter of John MONTGOMERY and Jane Carr SCOTT.
Besides their own children, John and Jane MONTGOMERY adopted Elizabeth Osborn EAST and Chestina. Elizabeth was 3 years old at the time of Jane's death in 1873 and was presumably the 13 year old living in Margaret NORSWORTHY's home in the 1881 census. Elizabeth married Thomas POWELL in Brandon, Manitoba and had two daughters, one of whom was Lena Grace, who married a Percy TOPP on 29 December 1917 in Elkhorn, Manitoba. Chestina married Ed SEARLES. Neither Elizabeth nor Chestina were mentioned in John MONTGOMERY's will when he died in 1876. (Personal communication)
Further research on the above information shows the adopted daughter, Elizabeth MONTGOMERY, living in the MONTGOMERY home, age 3, in the 1871 census. At age 13, in the 1881 census, she appears as Lizzie MONTGOMERY, servant, in the home of John and Margaret NORSWORTHY. Elizabeth EAST married Thomas POWELL on the 24 November 1886. They had several children, one of whom was named Frank Osborn POWELL, born 6 February 1900 in Manitoba. Elizabeth Osborn(e) POWELL, born 3 May 1869, died 13 June 1944 at Wallace, Manitoba, age 75. (Manitoba Vital Statistics online). Thomas POWELL, Elizabeth, and their son, Frank, are buried at Kola Anglican Church Cemetery. (Find A Grave) [1, 2, 4, 5]
