Notes |
- "John Thomas HALL was born on August 22, 1880 in St. Levan, Cornwall. He was one of seven surviving children, four sons and three daughters of Sally EDDY and William HALL. John Thomas was named for twin brothers who had died before John's birth. His other known siblings include George, who married a woman named Eliza or Elizabeth; Mary, who married William OSBORNE and eventually emmigrated to the United States; Frank, who married Minnie SHUGG, the daughter of the boarding house owner in Arizona; Selenea; William; and Elizabeth. Also known is Ellen, who may have died as a child. There are said to have been twelve children in all." (Gretchen Ballema, 1993)
"John Thomas HALL was a miner from a long line of miners that dug coal from under the Atlantic. Mabel was the daughter of a stone mason which was a social class up from the miners. As such, Mabel was eligible to be an upstairs maid in an upper class home. I'm told it was not customary for classes to marry outside their own, however such was the case with John and Mabel. John worked in several different mines in the area and the family lived in such mining towns as Phoenix, Kearsarge and finally Centennial. These were all outside of Calumet in the Keewenaw Peninsula. John eventually became mining captain at the Centennial by 1930 and the area began to decline. John also contracted a lung disease from mining and had to retire from the business. They moved to the Jackson, Michigan area in the 40's after most of the children had left home, which is where John died. (Bill Ehn, 2001).
[Further research has demonstrated that the "twins" after which John Thomas HALL was reportedly name were not likely to have been twins. A Thomas and a John HALL were born to William and Sarah but in 1862 and 1866 respectively. Thomas died at age 8, and John at age 6. The wife of Frank HALL was Minnie NANKERVIS, not SHUGG. There were two Ellen Jane's born to William and Sarah; the first child died only days after birth. ] (Anne Brooks, 2010)
