  Notes	Samuel was the son of Edward and Jane (Joan) CHAFFE. The relationship between Samuel CHAFFE and Eliza NORRISH is not understood; no marriage has been found, but at her death she appeared as "the wife of Samuel CHAFFE" in the death announcement. In the 1851 census, Eliza's daughter, Thurza NORRISH, appears living with her unmarried mother, and grandmother in Hexworthy outside of Lydford. In the 1861 census, Samuel appears living at Sweaton, Widecombe in the Moor, with Eliza NORRISH as a housekeeper in his home, along with Thurza. By the 1871 census, Thurza has married Albert CAUNTER, and they both appear in Samuel CHAFFE's home as his son in law, and daughter. In the 1881 and 1891 censuses, Samuel is living with a housekeeper named Agnes NORRISH. In all censuses he appears as being unmarried. [A NORRISH researcher has contacted me to say that the housekeeper, Agnes NORRISH, living in Samuel CHAFFE's home in 1881 and 1891 was "the widow of John, Eliza NORRISH's. Agnes's maiden name was HUXHAM and she was christened in Ugborough in 1817. Agnes and John may have had a daughter named Thirza NORRISH born in 1851 (as indicated in the 1861 census); not to be confused with the Thirza who was Eliza and Samuel CHAFFE's purported daughter".
