1907 [1] |
- He might have witnessed the marriage of his sister, Mabel to John Thomas HALL on 3 February 1907 which would meanthat either John did not leave for Canada until after this date, or that he came back to England at least once. The other possibility is that the witness was her father.

Notes |
- Kay Ford writes, " I am told by my mother the oldest in the family of Yellands in Canada, Mary Harvey (Yelland) DUKE, that they came to Canada from Penzance Cornwall. As a young man, granddad was a baker journeyman and baked pasties for the royal family, King Edward the 7th, Duke of Cornwall. Grandad made pasties at the Mountby Hotel where the King was staying at that time. Granddad caught "Bakers consumption" and decided to come to Canada in June 1904 with his wife and daughter who was 2 and a half years old . They came across the ocean on the Mariposa and settled in the Toronto area (Scarlett Plains). Granddad went to work for Gurney Foundries where they made furnaces. He enjoyed family picnics and fishing and gardening very much. He raised his family of four girls and one boy, Mary Harvey, Mable, Nellie, Dora, John. Granddad died at an early age of 54 in Scarlett Plains, Toronto. Grama (Mathew) YELLAND lived with us on and off. Grama was a lovely enjoyable person. We had lots of good times together. Grama was loved by all in the family. Grama died at age 81".
In a later letter from Kay Ford, Feb. 2003, she writes, " My mother corrects me, telling me that Mary Harvey (Mathews) YELLAND's sister, Bessie MATHEWS, [who married a McDonald] came to Canada first, and got a house; then John William Henry YELLAND came ahead of his family and stayed with Bessie until he got work and his own place. Then my mother, Mary Harvey (Yelland) DUKE and Grama, Mary Harvey (Mathews) YELLAND, along with her sister Catherine came to Canada". [1]

- John William St. Kevern YELLAND, Bachelor, age 23, Stonemason, son of William Henry YELLAND, Stonemason; and Emma RICKARD, Spinster, age 24, daughter of John RICKARD, Carpenter, married 25 December 1876. Both were residing in Devonport at the time of marriage. Witnesses: William Henry YELLAND and W. SYMONS. All were able to write their names. Curate J. Hector Tourcelles.
[If John was born in 1855 then he would have actually been only 21 at the time of his marriage. If Emma was born in 1849, she would have been 27. It appears there is some problem with their ages on the document, and possibly Emma's birth date; in the 1881 census they are four years apart, and in 1891 and 1901, they are two years apart. It also appears there might have been some confusion regarding the occupation of William Henry YELLAND as he had not previously been known as a stonemason]. [5]
