Cornwall, England [3, 4] |
- In loving memory of my Dear Husband John YELLAND, who died suddenly at Helston, Jan. 27, 1916.
We never knew the pain he bore,
We never saw him die,
We only know he passed away,
And never said good-bye.
O, how oft my thoughts do wander,
To the grave not far away,
Where I laid my dearest husband,
Just twelve months ago to-day.
Inserted by his loving wife and children. E. YELLAND
Cornishman 01 February 1917.

Buried |
30 Jan 1916 |
Penzance Cemetery, Penzance, Cornwall, England [5] |
Address: St. Clare Rd., Penzance, Cornwall England |
- He is buried in Penzance Cemetery, St. Clare Rd., Penzance; Plot no. 20S10; Consecrated section. [Ironically, even though his life's work had been devoted to cutting and carving stone, there is no headstone. His wife, Emma, was eventually buried beside him. They are the only YELLANDs in this cemetery, reportedly the oldest in Penzance.]
|
Notes |
- John's birth registration has not been found. He came to have St. Keverne in his name because his father, William Henry, almost drowned while a passenger on the Barque John, which was wrecked on the Manacles off St. Keverne, in May 1855. His father was so thankful he had survived, that he placed "St. Keverne" within his soon to be born son's name.
For the story about the shipwreck including the deposition of John's father, William Henry YELLAND, at the inquest see:

Emma Louise RICKARD, b. Abt 1852, St. Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall, England , d. 4 Jul 1930, Penzance, Cornwall, England (Age ~ 78 years) |
Married |
25 Dec 1876 |
Stoke Damerel, Devon, England [8] |
- John William St. Kevern YELLAND, Bachelor, age 23, Stonemason, son of William Henry YELLAND, Stonemason; and Emma RICKARD, Spinster, age 24, daughter of John RICKARD, Carpenter, married 25 December 1876. Both were residing in Devonport at the time of marriage. Witnesses: William Henry YELLAND and W. SYMONS. All were able to write their names. Curate J. Hector Tourcelles.
[If John was born in 1855 then he would have actually been only 21 at the time of his marriage. If Emma was born in 1849, she would have been 27. It appears there is some problem with their ages on the document, and possibly Emma's birth date; in the 1881 census they are four years apart, and in 1891 and 1901, they are two years apart. It also appears there might have been some confusion regarding the occupation of William Henry YELLAND as he had not previously been known as a stonemason]. [8]
