- In Memoriam: Mr. John J. BECK. The death of Mr. John J. BECK in his 76th year, which occured at his home in Murray River, Sunday morning, April 19th, 1953, came as a shock to his family and friends, although he had been in ill health of the past six years.
He was born in White Sands and was the son of the late Benjamin BECK and Mary MACLEAN. He was well and favourably known throughout Kings and Queens counties, for in addition to his farming activities, he was engaged with his brother Hubert in the coastal shipping trade, operating a sailing vessel. The brothers also owned a general store at Murray River, for a number of years, and he was a Justice of the Peace for Kings county.
Besides, his sorrowing widow (nee Annie CAMPBELL, formerly of Nine Mile Creek), he leaves to mourn his passing, eleven children: Mary (Mrs. ZERNIKO, N.Y.,); Olive, Cambridge, Mass.; Hubert, Cambridge, Mass.; Katherine (Mrs RYDER, N.Y.); Vivian (Mrs. J. B. JENKINS, Summerside); Benjamin, Summerside; Constance (Mrs. Fred BROOKS, Summerside); Hazel (Mrs. Gordon SULIS, Saint John); Elwood and Elsie at home; Jennie (Mrs. Martin MACPHERSON, Uigg); also sixteen grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters: Mrs. Louis HERRING (Josie), Murray River; Mrs. Murdock MACLEOD (Lilian), Dedham, Mass.; one brother, Hubert, New Glasgow, N.S. Three sisters and one brother pre-deceased him.
The funeral was very largely attended in spite of the wet weather and was held from the home. Mr. Arnold MacNamara of Tyne Valley, a representative of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society conducted the funeral service, taking for his text "The resurrection and hope in God's Kingdom". Mr. MacNamara used many scriptures to point out the real hope that it held out in God's word concerning the resurrection and the blessings that are in store for obedient mankind on a paradise earth. Hymns sung were, Grateful Praise, and Praise the King of Eternity. The text at the grave was taken from 1 Cor., chapter 15, verses 12-26. Interment was in Murray River cemetery.
Guardian of the Gulf, 25 November 1953.

Notes |
- John Joseph BECK was born in White Sands in December, 1877, the son of Benjamin BECK and Mary MACLEAN. John grew up in White Sands and went into business in Murray River. He and his brother Hubert operated Beck Bros. General store which was located on water frontage at the northeast corner of the bridge. They had their own wharf where vessels would tie up to load and unload cargo. John was also a sea captain and owned and operated his own schooner for a time. Syd Munn remembers that his Uncle John used to have a horse named "Barney" that was used to move goods to and from the vessels that came in. Beck Bros dealt in groceries, dry goods, feed, lumber and farm equipment. Their father, Ben, had a store in White Sands when they were growing up and they probably got their start and training in the business at home. Later they hired him to help out around the store in Murrray River.
John married Annie CAMPBELL and they had 11 children. He bought a farm about a mile outside Murray River on the road to Montague, just beyond a big swamp. When speaking of him, people often referred to him as "John BECK in the swamp" for identification purposes. John and his family lived in a camp on the property while his house was being built. His father, Ben, built the house and the land was slowly cleared. Syd MUNN said when he was a boy of 10 or so, he and his father, John Archie, would go out there to cut wood for their winter's supply. Syd said they would borrow a horse from Uncle Vere to haul the wood home.
John was also the Justice of the Peace and handled routine legal documents for people in the area. In later years he made his living as a farmer. He was a great story teller and entertainer. Sibyl MUNN said he could keep everybody laughing all evening. He was a good mimic, and did an excellent takeoff of Herbie BEATON, an itinerant peddler, well-known through that part of the Island. "Uncle John would sit looking into the stove and do his takeoff. Honest to goodness you would swear it was Herbie", Sibyl said. He was also an excellent singer. Like all of Ben Beck's children, he spoke Gaelic which he had picked up from his mother. John died in April, 1953, at the age of 75. (written by Ivan Munn, Sept 1997) [5]
