- He served in the military. On his attestation papers he appears as, "William BYRNE, born Murray Harbour, P.E.I., on 7 February 1897; Baker; not married. Methodist. Next of kin, Matilda BYRNE (mother) residing at Stellarton, Pictou County, Nova Scotia". Signed William BYRNE on 8 July 1915. His medical exam showed him to be 5-10 in height, fair complexion, light blue eyes and light brown hair.

- William married Rhoda Emily WILLIAMS on 1 January 1920 at Millers Corner, Springhill, Nova Scotia. Rhoda was the daughter of Thomas James WILLIAMS and Rhoda PIERCE; she was born 21 July 1899 in England and died 9 January 1983 in Lebanon, Missouri, U.S.A. Their children were Rhoda, Constance Margaret Wicks, and Violet. [3]
