- Obituary: "On Saturday, August 18th, the community of Murray Harbour South was shocked to hear of the sudden death of Mr. John BROOKS, one of its most respected residents. Though 82 years of age, he seemed to have retained his usual health. He visited his sister Mrs. David HUGH, a distance of some miles which he traveled on foot, and on Saturday paid his last visit to his daughter Mrs. Henry BREHAUT, and took a last look at the old home. Returning he complained of being very weary and in conversation with his aged partner said he had paid his last visit. Rising from the lounge he suddenly sat back and expired. He was a man who took a great interest in the public questions, with a wonderful memory, and was ever ready to give his assistance and sympathy when needed, generous in his home where he will be missed by his family and in the community where he resided. The deceased leaves to mourn an aged widow, two daughters, Mrs. AITKEN, Ch'town, and Mrs. Henry BREHAUT, White Sands, and three sons, David at home, James in Murray Harbour, and John in the United States, all of whom have the Patriot's sympathy in their bereavement."
