- At 19 years of age, James went to Amherst, Nova Scotia where he entered the employ, as apprentice, of Mr. J. W. WHITE where he learned the trade of carriage builder and painter. For almost 60 years he carried on a successful woodworking business at Murray Harbour. His son, Howard, and three children predeceased him. His wife and children all moved to British Columbia sometime after the 1911 census. [6]

- John and Ann moved to their home in Murray Harbour, which they purchased from John Cowan; they remained there for the rest of their lives. Their house they left behind in White Sands, became home for Henry E. BREHAUT and their daughter, Belle, who had returned from the United States with their children.
