At the inquest passengers stated that the captain and some of the crew smelled of liquor, and a verdict of manslaughter was returned against Captain Rawle, but at the Assizes he was acquitted. - Banns of Marriage read at Devonport, St. Mary, between William Henry YELLAND, Parish of St. Mary's, Devonport, and Mary Grace COGHLAN, Parish of Emmanuel: Mannamead?, were read on 30 Mary 1886; 6 June 1886; and 13 June 1886.
Banns of Marriage read at Plymouth, Emmanuel, between William Henry YELLAND, Widower, of the Parish of St. Mary, Devonport and Mary Grace COGHLAN, Spinster, of this Parish. Published, 30 May, 6 June, and 13 June 1886.
William Henry YELLAND, age 65, Widower, Foreman of Saw Mills, residing 71 Charlotte St., Devonport, son of John YELLAND, Gentleman; married Mary Grace COGHLAN, age 42, Spinster, residing 1 Hyde Park Road, Compton Gifford, daughter of John COGHLAN, Farmer. Married on 26 June 1886 at Emmanuel Church in the Parish of Compton Gifford, Devon, after Banns by Rev? Brian Weeks, Curate of St. Judes, Plymouth. Witnesses: W. ARTHUR and Jaria? LEY.
[According to oral family history, William did marry a second time, and died shortly after. I have some reservations about the statement that William's father, John, was a "Gentleman", given his occupation as a "Labourer" at William's first marriage in 1841, in the 1851 census, and his early death in 1856 which would not allow much time to accumulate either monies or gentleman status. Nevertheless, the presence of the witness, W. ARTHUR was most likely his son in law, husband of Louisa Elizabeth YELLAND. The second witness had the same surname as the head of the house where Mary Grace was employed in 1861 and 1871.] Anne Brooks [6]
