      John BROOKS. Fiddler Played Hymns
      .
Funeral was held Monday for John Lemuel BROOKS in the Central Saanich Church where he substituted for an organist many years ago by leading the hymns with his fiddle-playing. Funeral for the former prominent Central Saanich area farmer was held in Shady Creek United Church. He died Thursday in Vancouver at the age of 95.

Mr. BROOKS played the fiddle at services in the church for two years after it was built because there was not enough money to buy an organ. When the church bought an organ, Mr. Brooks' sister became the organist. Born in Bloomington, Illinois, Mr. BROOKS came to Central Saanich area, then known as Saanich, with his parents in 1885 and started working on the 100 acre farm at Keating his father bought from George Stelly.

He served on the old Saanich council for five years and was a member of the old Saanich school board for seven years. He learned the art of blacksmithing, did all of his own blacksmith work on the farm and shod horses for his neighbors. While on the school board he played a major role in obtaining three high schools for the district: Mount Douglas, Mount View and Mount Newton.

Mr. BROOKS is survived by three sons, Jack of Duncan; Tom of Portland, Oregon; and Walter of Crofton; a daughter, Mrs. Lillian WIGHT of Victoria; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Lillian MORRIS of Vancouver.

    Notes
    • On his 90th birthday an article was printed in the local paper which provided some insight into his life.

Car Driver Test No Big Problem To 90 Year Old.

Still in the driver's seat is an old-time Saanich farmer who will celebrate his 90th birthday, Friday. John BROOKS of 422 Menzies came to British Columbia in 1885 and helped his father clear a 100 acre farm on Stelly's Cross Road. He later cleared another 50 acres and continued to farm there until 1944, when he sold out and bought another farm at Crofton.

Not only was he a pioneer farmer, but he was among the first to own and operate a motor car on Vancouver Island. It was 1912 when he bought a two-year-old Buick for $600, and hired a man, for a dollar a day and board, to teach him how to drive.

Toured Saanich: After three or four days of instruction he got up early one morning and started off in the Buick with a few friends. Together they toured the gravel roads of Saanich. Everything went well until he returned home and stepped on the gas instead of the brake as he pulled into the garage. "The thing's blowed up," screamed his mother. But the thing had not "blowed up" and Mr. BROOKS hasn't hit a thing since. In all of his 52 years of driving he has yet to receive a ticket. Only two weeks ago he had his annual driver's test and he said, "I got nearly 100 percent".

Music Lessons. In his early days he drove to town in a two-wheeled cart and pony for high school lessons and violin instruction once a week. He continued his violin lessons with Prof. Ernie WOLF for three years and later joined his 10 piece orchestra. Today Mr. BROOKS still enjoys playing one of this three violins and a piano which he keeps close by in his bed-sitting room.

During his farming days in Saanich, Mr. BROOKS served on the School Board for Ward 6 (Central Saanich), and worked hard to have the first high school built in the area. Having six children of his own, he knew first hand what it cost to send a child to school in Victoria. At that time the fare was 70 cents a day on the old Interurban Railway.

High School Built. Before leaving the school board he saw Mt. Newton High School constructed. Mr. BROOKS also takes credit for having the West Road paved in 1923, which in turn prompted the Mill Bay Ferry to go into service. He served as councillor for Ward 6 from 1918 to 1923. His longevity he credits to long hours and fresh air on the farm.

Teetotaller. Although he doesn't take a drink now he has not always been an abstainer. "When I was younger I used to stay in the beer parlor as long as anybody, but it was different then, we used to always say the car would run better after a few drinks," said the quiet pipe-smoker as he contemplated what he might buy to entertain his friends at the party, Friday.
