    Notes
    • Beginning with the 1861 census, and after his marriage, Abednego consistently appears as Benjamin UREN. The following represents the rationale that Abednego Harvey UREN who married Frances THOMAS is the same person as Benjamin UREN, living with a Frances and children, in the 1861-1901 censuses:

Benjamin UREN cannot be found in 1841 nor 1851 censuses; Abednego Harvey UREN can.
Abednego cannot be found in 1861-1901 censuses; Benjamin UREN can.

Birth, marriage, and death registrations exist only for Abednego Harvey UREN.

The marriage which occurred between Abednego Harvey UREN and Frances THOMAS, took place in St. Just on 19 April 1857. There is no marriage recorded in the transcripts of St. Just Parish Church for any Benjamin UREN to a Frances in this time frame.

Benjamin and Frances gave names to their children which would reflect the family of Abednego: Nicholas, George and Charles. Their first child named, Richard, would reflect Frances THOMAS' father, believed to be also Richard.

There is a birth registration for a Richard Thomas UREN JAS 1857 Penzance 5c 326; this is age appropriate for the Richard Uren, son of Benjamin, in 1861 census. No other birth registration can be found for a Richard in this time frame in this district.

Richard Thomas UREN, father Abednego Harvey UREN, labourer, age 26, Bach, miner of Churchtown, married Margaret Ann Noy DAVEY, 28, spinster, of New Downs. Father John DAVEY, greengrocer, on 9 April 1884 by banns, in St. JUST. Witnesses John Davey and James UREN. James UREN is the name of another son in Benjamin's home.

In 1891 only one Richard UREN, of the appropriate age, can be found born in St. Just; Richard T. UREN and Margaret above.

Benjamin UREN is a witness to a marriage 15 Jan 1874 between Thomas THOMAS, 24, bach, miner of Churchtown; father - Henry THOMAS, [mark] miner, and Elizabeth Ann LAVIS, [mark] age 18, spinster of Churchtown; father-Richard LAVIS. Witnesses: William HOSKING [mark] and Benjamin UREN [mark]. This might be Benjamin/Abednego and demonstrates the connection to the THOMAS family.

Examples of how Abednego and Benjamin were interchangeable names in this family:

In the will of Nicholas UREN in 1812, his son, Abednego, was referred to as Benjamin.

There is a baptism for Jane UREN, dau. of Benjamin UREN and Grace on 28 Feb. 1830 in Sennen. All other children were baptized to Abednego UREN and Grace.

In an email in January 2007, Sandra Pritchard reported:

Abednego [and its many different spellings] was passed down from the HARVEYS for many generations and percolated into other family lines. I have two Abednego Harveys among my trees. It definitely was changed to the familiar and diminutive BEN when they were children and thus people often mistook it as an abbreviation for Benjamin. Some even adopted it in preference when they were older -especially if their parents had passed on!!!!

Son Abednego that married Amy [Abi] Reynolds had a son Abednego and this is the entry for his baptism at Pendeen, plus that of his daughter Grace at St Just...........

GRACE UREN 10 SEP 1848 Saint Just In Penwith
      Father: ABEDNEGO UREN Mother: ABI

ABEDNEGO UREN 01 NOV 1850 Pendeen
      Father: BENJAMIN UREN Mother: AMY

Since all birth, marriage, and death registrations are in the name of Abednego Harvey UREN, it would seems pointless to attempt to prove this by purchasing one. The most useful registration for this purpose might be that of the birth of Richard Thomas Uren as it might possibly show his father to be Benjamin rather than Abednego. Until that happens, the assumption will be made that Abednego and Benjamin are one and the same person, unless someone can demonstrate differently. (Anne Brooks, January 2007)
