      David Ray BROOKS, December 23, 1911 - January 25, 2006

On January 25, 2006, David "Ray" BROOKS, of Murray Harbour passed away at the Kings County Memorial Hospital, in Montague, at the age of 94.

Ray was born in Murray Harbour on December 23, 1911 to the late David and Lauretta BROOKS. He was predeceased by his sister, Verna, and brothers John and Fred. Ray married Ruth LeLACHEUR, of Guernsey Cove, and they spent their married years at their mixed farm in Murray Harbour.

Ray's entire life involved working in the area. He farmed, worked at the starch factory in Murray Harbour, the Brooks & Irving Feed Mill, and fished lobsters from a dory. He also raised bees and processed honey on his Honey Brook Farm.

Ray and Ruth were splendid gardeners and their colourful, well-kept flowerbeds, vegetable gardens, and fruit trees enhanced their brook-side property. The countless ribbons and awards which were proudly displayed in Ray's home, attested to the quality of his beloved roses which he entered in annual community fairs and share with friends and family. They also shared a love of animals and were rarely without a dog.

When Ruth's health began to deteriorate, Ray lovingly cared for her during a lengthy illness. Ray continued living in the family home and, as long as his health permitted, to garden and tend to his roses. His door was always open to friends and family with whom Ray loved to discuss current affairs, or reminisce about days gone by. He was a valued local historian, as his memory remained keen throughout his long life. Ray was a long-time member of the Murray Harbour Presbyterian Church, from where his largely-attended funeral was held.

The family of Ray BROOKS wish to express their thanks to the many people who showed kindness to Ray, especially in the later years, when he had become less mobile. To the doctors and nurses whose professional care and attention made Ray's last stay in the hospital more bearable; also, to those who attended Ray's wake and funeral, your thoughtfulness was much appreciated.
