    Notes
    • In 1901, while visiting the home of George NORSWORTHY, Joseph COOMBE wrote a biography of his family. This was placed, along with a similar biography written by James C. NORSWORTHY, within cement steps that James had built for George while visiting. Of himself, Joseph COOMBE wrote: " The writer of this sketch, desiring to equip himself better for the responsibilities of life, began a collegiate course in North Western University, from which he graduated in 1880. On June 2cd., 1879, he was married to Mary Agnes VANVECKTEN. To this union one son was born, Harry Norton. In the fall of 1880 I united with the Illinois Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church. After preaching four years in this Conference, we removed to Eldorado, Kansas, where for a time I had charge of a cattle ranch. In 1888 I was transferred to the South West Kansas Conference, and stationed at Borton, Kansas. From there, transferred to Halstear, Kansas, from which place we returned to Illinois in 1890. From that time to the present, we have resided in Arcola, Douglas County, Illinois, as farm manager for my uncle, the late Elijah COOMBE, of Cincinnati, Ohio. My brother John died at the age of 55, William 65, and Elijah 62. Two members of my family remain, Mary J. in her 71st year, and Joseph, the writer of this sketch in his 60th year.

Being on a visit to Florida, we came to McIntosh, to see our cousins, W. G., and James NORSWORTHY. My cousin James, being a worker in cement as a side line, determined to build these memorial steps, inside of which we have consigned a brief sketch of our families."
