Notes |
- "Almost everyone in Preston Village was very poor as it was in the days of the depression. My father had no work for years. He was a shipyard driller by trade who used to go down to the gates of the shipyards near the ferry to wait for work. Things did change and there was plenty of work leading up to the war in 1939 and during the war". (written by Dorothy SIMPSON, 2006) [5]

- Frederick NESSWORTHY, age 21, Bachelor, Labourer, residing at 38 Livingstone St., son of Robert NESSWORTHY, Shipwright; and Ursula Wilhelmina GAVIN, age 18, Spinster, residing at 38 Livingstone St., daughter of David GAVIN, [illegible occupation]. They were married after Banns, on 23 July 1899 at St. Stephens Parish Church, South Shields, by A. McCullagh, Rector. Both signed the register, as did the witnesses, William FOSTER and Jane SMITH. [It would appear that Ursula was younger than 18 years; in the 1891 census she was only 7 years old, if that is accurate.] [6]
