Notes |
- The marriage registration of Chester and Carrie states Carrie was the daughter of Charles and Deborah MANN. Further research indicates that Charles MANN first married Deborah BARNES.
Charles MANN, Yarmouth & Deborah BARNES, Southwold; April 25, 1854. Witnesses: Maitland MANN, Yarmouth; W. Nelson BARNES, Southwold; License. (Elgin County Marriages, 1853-1864)
The family in 1861 appear with a son, Joseph Harvey MANN, age 5. In 1867, Charles MANN married Lydia OSTRANDER, leading one to believe Deborah died.
Charles MANN, age 42, Yarmouth, son of Daniel and Elizabeth, married Lydia OSTRANDER, age 28, Yarmouth, daughter of Jacob and Mary, on 7 January 1867. Witnesses, W. A. MANN, St. Thomas, and Rachel OSTRANDER, Yarmouth. Solemnized by Edmund Sheppard, a minister of the Christian Disciple church. (Elgin County)
In the 1871 census, Charles and Lydia appear with two children, one of them being Carrie; all children would have been born before the marriage of Charles and Lydia, and therefore one assumes their mother to have been Deborah. In the 1881 census, there are three children in the family, all of whom were born before 1867. At the death of Lydia MANN in 1911, Lydia's parents were reported to be Jacob OSTRANDER and Mary MACPHAIL. At the death of Carrie NORSWORTHY, her parents were reported to be "father's surname MANN; mother's maiden name OSTRANDER". Based on the above information, this is most likely an error made by the informant due to the passage of time as Carrie would have been raised by Lydia as a child.
Jacob OSTRANDER (Feb 1799 - 29 May 1877) married Mary MCPHAIL (10 August 1808, Scotland - 23 May 1872 Yarmouth Twp., Elgin, Ontario). Both are buried at St. Thomas Cemetery. Lydia was born ca 1839 and died 19 June 1917 and is also buried at St. Thomas Cemetery. Charles MANN was the son of Daniel MANN and Elizabeth [unknown]. (Book) Charles' death certificate stated he was the son of Daniel MANN and Elizabeth WOODWORTH.(Index) [2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10]
