    • The following communication from Terry GILLESPIE raises a question regarding the paternity of Mary "Minnie" GILLESPIE.

He wrote in November, 2005: " Nellie was a very meticulous person and certainly kept detailed notes about family events over the years, including dates of births, marriages and deaths. I extracted everything that I could and have scanned most of the material. One of Nellie's entries (her mother's birth date) was recorded as 08 Nov 1871. At that time I didn't know the date of Capt. James GILLESPIE's death---mother always said that he died young while coming ashore from Partridge Island. But nobody knew that date. Later I learned, from Dan Johnson's newspaper files, that Capt. James, his son William, and a young man named McLatchy on 17 Apr 1867 had moored their schooner (named Industry) at Pisarinco (now Lorneville) on a voyage from Hillsborough to Portland with a cargo of coal. In the morning they went ashore in a small boat to conduct business in town (Saint John). Then, in the early afternoon they departed to return to their vessel. But they were never heard from again and were presumed to have drowned. That certainly raised a question. Mary's next older sister was Annie was born on 9 Sep 1865. Annie was a skilled tailoress who lived with the family. She was a small lively person and was always around when we visited with Dad. I thought that Nellie could have made an error about the date of her mother's birth (and there are lots of those that's for sure). Given that children in those years used to be born within 1 1/2 to 2 years of the previous child, I recorded her (Mary's) birth as somewhere between 1867 and 1872. Just recently another person who is a certified genealogist, in correspondence with me, has baptismal records indicating baptism in Feb 1872 and birth was recorded as about 6 months previously.

So this is a moot question indeed. I don't think any of the surviving Lutes members are aware of this. Capt James drowned in 1867 and his wife, Rosannah, was listed as a widow in the 1881 census. Did she bring up an orphan child, or did she or someone else have a child by an unknown person ? ---I simply don't know the answer but I'm content at this juncture to let the question rest."

    Notes
    • " She was reportedly the 13th and youngest child of Captain James GILLESPIE (1820-1867), an Irish immigrant from Moville, Co. Donegal who came to Hillsborough, Albert Co., in 1838, and Rosannah STEEVES (1823-1898), a great grand-daughter of Heinrich STEEVES, a German immigrant to Albert Co., via Pennsylvania and Moncton.
