    Notes
    • Emma was the daughter of Abraham POPE and Sarah CRAMPTON, who married 22 May 1828 in Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire. Emma had seven siblings; a brother, Aaron, died 15 April 1920 in Tampico, Illinois. "Abraham and Sarah came to America in 1850, crossing the Atlantic in a sailing vessel, which was seven weeks in completing the voyage from England to New Orleans". (Book)

The story of her parents as told by William F. TURGOOSE, great grandson, 1981:

"Sarah and Abraham POPE left Lincolnshire, England in 1853 with their 8 children, three of the Turgoose family, and other friends. They were 12 weeks crossing from England to New Orleans. Arriving there, they took a riverboat up the Mississippi to Lyndon, Illinois. Abraham bought farm land and after two years moved to Tampico, Illinois and farmed there till 1874 when he sold out to his son Aaron, and left for Victoria, British Columbia. Went to San Francisco by rail, from there by ship to Victoria. Stayed with his daughter, Emma TURGOOSE, for a year, then bought 79 acres east of the Turgoose farm at Newton X Road. He built a house and a carpenter's shop and made furniture. Betsy HARRISON came out with them and she married John HARRISON in November 1874. Aaron POPE and his wife came out with them but went back and took over the farm in Illinois. In 1878 (May) they celebrated their 50th wedding aniversary. In December 1878 Sarah died. Abraham stayed at his own place for 5 years, then went and stayed with Turgooses till his death in 1886. They are both buried at St. Stephen's Church yard." (Ancestry.com)
