Notes	Who was Robert SNOW who married Catherine STONEMAN? I initally began this research thinking that Robert SNOW, baptised 7 April 1806, South Molton, might have been the son of William SNOW and Christian WAY who married 24 August 1802 at Morchard Bishop. Other children baptized to this couple were William in 1803 at Morchard Bishop, and John in 1808 at South Molton. A Christian SNOW was buried 27 September 1826 at Morchard Bishop, "of Bristol" written in the notes. I have been unable to find any further trace of them in the 1841 census to my satisfaction. This SNOW line has been fully developed backwards numerous generations on Rootsweb (Families of Morchard Bishop). Depending on the censuses, Robert's year of birth was around 1801 in 1841; 1795 in 1850 census; 1799 in 1870 census; 1794 in 1880 census; and according to his memorial stone, he was born 5 September 1796 (calculated from "died age 87 years, 6 months, 29 days"). It is interesting to note that none of his children were given his mother's name, Christian, nor his father's, William. A baptism in 1806 does appear rather late for a birth in the censuses consistently earlier than 1800. I believe a better candidate for Robert SNOW is Robert son of Robert SNOW and Elizabeth, baptised privately on 5 September 1796 at Chittlehampton. Ironically this date of baptism is the date of birth given on the memorial stone for Robert SNOW. His father, Robert SNOW married Elizabeth YEALDEN in 1795 at North Molton and they baptised two children, Ann in 1795 at South Molton, and Robert in 1796 at Chittlehampton. While there is no further proof that he IS the correct Robert SNOW, his age is appropriate, and he was "of North Molton", at the time of his marriage to Catherine STONEMAN. Two of their children were named Elizabeth and Robert, which helps to support this choice. A search at Find My Past for a baptism for Robert SNOW in and around South Molton between the years 1786-1806 brings up only three: Robert, son of Edward, in 1788 at Rackenford; Robert, son of William, in 1806, at South Molton; and, Robert, son of Robert, in 1796 at Chittlehampton. Until further research discovers another more suitable Robert SNOW as husband of Catherine STONEMAN, I will attach the last option to my family tree. ^{(Anne Brooks)}
