    • "FOUND HANGING IN SHED
      South Molton Pensioners Tragic End.
At the inquest conducted by Dr. Ellis Pearson (the North Devon Coroner) at South Molton on Monday on Lemuel HOBBS, aged 80, an old-age pensioner, of 55, East-street, who was found hanging in a shed at the rear of his cottage on Sunday, a verdict of "Suicide whilst temporarily insane" was returned.

William Henry HOBBS, of Barnstaple, son of the deceased, said his father had been a foreman tanner by occupation. For a year or more he had been suffering from depression, and sleeplessness, and had been attended by Dr. W. G. Mortimer. He gave no indication that he might take his life, and witness attributed the fact that he did so owing to his ill-health.

John Galliford, a neighbour, said he was called by Mr. HOBBS when she made the discovery on Sunday morning, and cut down the body, which was hanging from a beam.

Dr. W. G. Mortimer thought the fact that HOBBS had given up work and had nothing to do worried him a great deal. He formerly suffered from an irritation of the skin, which troubled him somewhat, but apart from that his health was very good. Death was due to asphyxia from strangulation.

The jury, of which Mr. S. Wroath was foreman, thought Mr. Galliford acted with great promptitude and presence of mind. They expressed their sympathy and gave their fees to the widow."
