    Notes
    • Albert was adopted by Daniel and Harriet MACHON. His parentage is yet unknown. In the 1880 census, Daniel and Harriet have two children living with them, Albert MARCHON, age 13, and Delia MARCHON, age 6. When Delia married John B. LEGG in 1893, she was identified as the daughter of Neil MCNEAL and "Lizzie", born 1874 in Prince Edward Island; witnesses at this marriage were L. MARCHON and H. MARCHON both residing in Bay City. (Marr. cert)

Further research shows that an Elmora H. LEGG was born 11 December 1895 in Bay City, Michigan, to John and Delia LEGG.(Birth reg) In the 1900 census, Hattie E. LEGG, a granddaughter, was living with Daniel and Harriet, presumably since the death of her mother. A submitted record at www.familysearch.org states that Delia died 13 January 1897 in Tuscon, Pima, Arizona and that she was buried in Bay City. While her name is listed on a transcription for Elm Lawn Cemetery in Bay City, there are no dates. (Cemetery transcription) Another submitted record states Delia died in Arizona. Her daughter, Elinor Harriet LEGG reportedly married Evart Wilber WATSON; she died and was buried at La Junta, Otero, Colorado in 1945.

January 2015: A researcher and descendant of Delia MCNEIL provided the following excerpt from a journal entry of her aunt:

"On grandma Jackie's side, her grandmother Delia McNEIL was born up north and then east of the state of Maine in a place called Prince Edward Island near Nova Scotia. Her parents, Neil McNeil and Lizzie decided to make a trip down to Michigan by way of the St. Lawrence River, to decide it they might want to move down to there. They were to be accompanied by their good friends, and it was decided that the child, Delia, be left with the parents (the Marshon's) of their friends. As the two couples made their way by boat and then by ferry, an accident occurred, the ferry capsized and many lives were taken, including the young McNeils and their good friends. The Marshon's got word of this tragedy and arranged to now raise Delia.

Delia grew up to be a remarkably beautiful and talented young woman. Two things that stand out about her was that she wore her hair short for a time and whistled on stage (considered to be unladylike then on both counts). She was also an elocutionist (the art of public speaking). Delia soon met and married John Bradford Legg, they settled in Bay City, MI and their first child was born, a girl they named Elnora. The couple were very much in love and making plans for a better future. They decided to take a trip west by train seeking a new home and high adventure. Elnora was 13 months old at the time and was to accompany them. By the time the train reached Tuscon, Arizona, Delia went into labor with their second child, and in doing so ran into problems, losing the life of the baby boy and then her own as well. The grieving husband and father now must leave the westbound train, put himself and the child Elnora on a train bound back east, while the bodies of his wife and infant son would travel in the baggage coach just ahead of the passenger coach. At first he encountered hostility from the other passengers as he would not comfort or stop the crying of the child he held in his arms. Later as the others learned the story they began to come forward and to offer solace and help in rocking or holding young Elnora until finally she slept leaving her father now with his sad thoughts of dreams and happiness that would not be realized in the way he had planned. A song entitled "In The Baggage Coach Ahead", was written and published a short time later. It was somewhat popular as a folk ballad during the early 1900's The composer of this song, Gussie L Davis, had witnessed these events during his days as a Pullman porter. Delia died 13 January 1897 in Tuscon, Pima, Arizona and was buried in Bay City, Michigan."
