    Notes
    • Up until May 2010 there had been little definitive proof that Samuel WONNACOTT married Mary BROOKS, daughter of John BROOKS and Ann BELL. No marriage, between 1865 and 1875, had been found in spite of a search by a reference archivist at the Massachusetts Archives leading one to think it might have occured on P.E.I. before they immigrated. No dates of death or burial for either Samuel, Mary, or his second wife, Anna, have been located. (Cemetery) Nevertheless, the original, unsourced, BROOKS document stated, "Mary married John WONNACOTT and died at a young age, leaving a family of six small children". The following is my personal rationale for her marriage to Samuel WONNACOTT.

      (1) Almost without exception the material contained in the original BROOKS document, written about 1964, has been significantly accurate; the inclusion of the name John WONNACOTT as Mary's husband makes it quite probable the surname was WONNACOTT. Samuel, being the son of John WONNACOTT, does not necessarily make it less so. This is the main reason I believe Mary to be the wife of Samuel.

      (2) A Wonnacott source stated Samuel married a Margaret BROOKS; no Margaret has been found. It does, nevertheless, again support a Wonnacott / Brooks connection. The birth record of one of their children noted the parents to be Samuel, a carpenter, and Mary. In the 1880 census, the only one in which Samuel's first wife appeared, she was described as Maria. A son later named his own daughter, Vivian Mary Wonnacott, (from birth certificate) but she always was known as Maria.

      (3) She did die early. It would seem she died shortly after the birth of her sixth child. Samuel remarried around 1883-1884.

      (4) Their children were given names that reflect not only the Wonnacott family, but also the Brooks. A son with John as a middle name, a son named William Thomas and a son named Ira.

      (5) Only one child's birth could be located and that was in the form of an an indexed list of births for that particular year. This information had been transcribed from the original birth records. Albert John was born in Somerville, Massachusetts; the place of birth for his parents was noted to be "N.S." for both.

      (6) Sadly the censuses give such conflicting information regarding place of birth that one could only conclude none were reliable. Mary appeared only in the 1880 census which stated both she and Samuel were born in England. Of the remaining censuses for Samuel, he was reported to have been born in Canada in 1900, P.E.I. in 1910, and Canada in 1920. Their married children reported their parents as being born in Canada, England, New York, and Massachusetts depending on the census. One son did report his father was born on P.E.I. and his mother in New Brunswick. There seems to be little dispute that Samuel was from Prince Edward Island. He can be found in Buffalo, New York along with his brothers, Isaac, and Thomas, and their families.

While this is far from definitive, I will connect Mary BROOKS to Samuel WONNACOTT until such time as further evidence disproves this working theory. (Anne Brooks)

May 2010: The discovery of the death of another son, Harry A., who died at age 0 in Somerville, Massachusetts, son of Samuel and Mary WONACOTT. (index only). This brings the total number of children to six, as originally reported in the Brooks document of 1964.

July 2010: The births and baptisms of Ira, George, and William Thomas confirm that their parents were Samuel WONNACOTT and Mary BROOKS. (New York Births and Christenings, 1640-1962; Indexing Project at www.familysearch.org.)

January 2011: The death registration of Harry A. WONACOTT has now been seen. Harry was born in Woburn, Massachusetts; died at age 7 months 27 days in Somerville, the son of Samuel and Mary, born Prince Edward Island. (Anne Brooks)

January 2011: The discovery of the "Statement of Intent to Marry" between Samuel WONACOTT and Mary BROOKS on 19 September 1872 in Woburn, Massachusetts now puts this discussion to rest once and for all. (Anne Brooks)
