    • (Living names removed) Betty Marie (Petersen Battishill) NORSWORTHY, 86, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, March 2, 2011 after a long courageous battle with cancer. There will be a graveside service at 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 8 at Sunset Memory Gardens, 11005 N US Highway 301, Thonotosassa, Florida 33592. An additional memorial service will be held at 10:00AM on Monday, March 14 at the Highland Baptist Church Chapel in Waco, Texas. Betty was born September 9, 1924 in Detroit Michigan to Walter and Anna PETERSEN. Later the family split up and she went to live her uncle and aunt, Ernest and Mary BATTISHILL. She was a very good student and graduated from high school at age 16 with the equivalent of a business school degree. She began to sing when she was very young and developed a lovely soprano voice, which she used to the glory of God most of her life until asthma took its toll on her. She met and later married Charles NORSWORTHY at church, where he had admired her as she sang solos in the choir. They married on April the 13th, 1946 right after Charles returned from active duty in World War II and moved to Tampa, Florida where he was from. They had 4 children, Staying home with the children when they were young, Betty would sew for the public to supplement their income. When the youngest started kindergarten she went to work as a bookkeeper and then later for insurance companies and eventually became an insurance underwriter before she retired. Betty and Chuck loved the Lord with all of their hearts and were always active in church, and raised their children to love the Lord as well. She was always helping and encouraging people, often quietly behind the scenes. It would take a book to list them all. In 1995, about 9 years after Chuck died, Betty moved to Waco, Texas to be near her daughter, and family. She began to attend Highland Baptist Church and became active in the choir. She also was involved with the Fellowship of Naomi at Highland and served as president and other offices. Betty was active with the Waco Senior Adult Choir and was president for a term. She often volunteered as a mentor at Dean Highland School. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her as she faithfully loved and worshipped the Lord to the end. She was preceded in death by her parents, her aunt and uncle, her husband Charles, and her siblings, Anna Ruth PETERSEN, Doris WILSON, Fred PETERSEN, and Burton PICKARD. She is survived by her children, 11 grandchildren, and 8 great-great children and many other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the ministry of a pastor and evangelist in India who she helped to support for many years, Babu Nair. Memorials to him can be sent through her friend, Lucille Bogan, 2924 W. Walnut St., Tampa, Florida, 33607.
